Born to the sounds
Of big band music
In a period of old time values
Where children were seen
But never heard
Dinner at five sharp
No elbows on the table
Evenings with the aroma
From Erinmore pipe smoke
Gathered around the Telefunken radio
Our pipeline to the world
Brand new Converse high tops
For the first day of school
Winter brought rubber boots lined with newspaper
Handmade wooly socks
Freedom was the old two wheel Schwin
Passed down a time or two
Rambling far and wide
Scraped knees and elbows
Games fueled by imagination
Bottles of soda guzzled
Frantic sprints
Escaping from Freemans Orchard
Stolen bounty cradled in arms
Spurred on by the shouts
Of the indignant owner
Teen years and the wonder
Of cars and girls
Life lessons learned along the way
Pumping gas at the Shell Station
Seventy five cents an hour
Twenty five dollars bought
The 46 Fargo pick up
I had longed for these many months
To cruise Main street
In a fog of oil smoke
Squealing belts and rust
With not a clue or care
What tomorrow would bring
Just youthful optimism
That all would be well
Oh, what lovely nostalgia!
ReplyDeleteBeing young was once easy I think... when I grew up there was a lot of angst of nuclear power and energy shortage...
ReplyDeleteBoth photo and poem took me back to those simpler times. I love those wartime houses. My grandma lived in one. My dad played in a big band. I loved this trip back in time, Robert. Those years were so alive with dreams.
ReplyDeleteThis out stands out for me
ReplyDelete"No elbows on the table"
HAPPY EASTER
much love...
Those are the days when we relish the present and keep future at bay!
ReplyDelete"With not a clue or care," this is the line that stood out for me. So true.
ReplyDeleteAh ! the old times :)
ReplyDeleteThe closing lines are beautiful -
"Just youthful optimism
That all would be well"
You brought back a rich store of memories, different but equal, while your closing sealed it in reality,

ReplyDeleteA window opening on to a bygone era. Enjoyed it a lot Buying a clunker for 25 dollars is amazing....I think you had a trouble free run in those days.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this evocative piece. You have rendered it so eloquently, and painted in the 'details' so beautifully, it is a journey back in time.
